WHY SHOULD YOU CHANGE TO
COMPUTERIZED MEDICAL RECORDS?
THE ELECTRONIC CHART
Today, computerized medical records make more sense than maintaining paper
charts!
One of the many advantages of a computerized system is the personnel time
saved. Estimates are that more than 20%
of staff time is spent pulling, filing and looking for patient charts. In offices where a file clerk had been used,
eliminating this position more than paid for the new system.
Other cost-saving factors include using less space to store records which
eliminates the need for file shelving, as well as the purchase of files
themselves. The doctor who spent hours
a day dictating charts now has more time to spend on patient care, which
generates more income for the practice.
Other advantages to a computerized records system include access for
doctors sharing call to review a patient’s record before offering a
recommendation. Referral labs,
hospitals, and x-ray facilities can send reports directly to your computer
where you can review them and add them to the patient’s record. Phone calls may be put into the patient’s
record along with the action taken. AND
NO MORE LOST CHARTS!
It is still a good idea to maintain the paper chart for backup and for
short-term active patients. Long-term
records can be archived thus saving space.
An electronic chart is more desirable than an electronic record. An audit trail is not necessary.
Take a look to see what a computerized medical records system can do for
your office.
